My mom might be getting a new car pretty soon. My car is reaching 131k and I’m afraid of having to deal with costly repairs and I don’t want nor need a large SUV anymore. My mom’s current car is a 2013 Hyundai Elantra which in my opinion is a pretty good car; it’s comfortable, sporty and gets decent fuel economy (better than my Pilot for sure). !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! but I like driving it.
What I was thinking that we could do is if the buy-out option isn’t too expensive, we buy out that Elantra and sell the Pilot. My mom is most likely getting an SUV of some sort so we don’t have too much of a need for it, plus the Pilot could be worth an okay (like 6k) amount of money if we sell it locally. Also it would mean I’m in a newer car with far less mileage and also a small one so I wouldn’t have to drive some useless behemoth. So would this be a good idea especially if the buy-out is a good price?

As long as you can profit from it, I’d say go for it.

I can understand you want out of the Pilot, but being afraid of costly repairs on a Honda with less than 150k is slightly paranoid. And the Pilot avoided most of the transmission problems on the lighter V6 autos, other than some teething problems in 2003.
The buyout price is going to be in the neighborhood of what the cars sell for now, so probably around $12k if not a bit higher.

Mine has been pretty reliable, but the thing is NOTHING has gone wrong, so I think within a few years, something could happen. We dodged a bullet with a 3rd gear pressure valve that we thought could be a bad transmission.
Seriously the only reason I want this to happen is to get out of the Pilot.

I mean, as I said, lease buyout probably 12k; maybe a bit higher, maybe a bit lower. Selling the Pilot, you said 6k or so. So the question becomes, will your Mom give you 6k or will you need to scare it up yourself to make this happen?

My parents will probably pay for it, especially if they feel it’s worth it.

I’d say go for it, then.
Though, I notice that Hyundai you linked at Carmax is listed in Connecticut. If you are in New England, can I interest you in a WRX wagon with 160,000 miles on it? If the Pilot having nothing go wrong worries you, have no fear! The valve covers come leaking already!

Hm... a car that’s much less reliable than the Pilot yet infinitely more interesting? Seems like a fantastic way to lose all of my free time lol.

On one hand, 380hp. On the other hand, the gas mileage is the same if not even worse than your Pilot.
And I wonder why selling this thing is so tough...I’m too honest.

Just bear in mind if you buy it back from hyundai, assuming it’s a lease, that the warranty will drop from 10 years 100k miles to 5 years 60k miles. Personally I wouldn't own one out of warranty given the experience that I had with my 2014 Elantra, but thats just my opinion.
